English is an international language, and being proficient in it allows individuals to communicate effectively with English speakers worldwide.

In English, there are five basic sentence patterns.

Patterns 1: Subject + Verb

  • Example:

    Sentence: The universe remains.

    Note:

    • ‘The universe’ is the subject of the action of this sentence, certainly, it’s the subject of this sentence
    • ‘Remains’ is the action of this sentence, so it’s the verb of this sentence

Patterns 2: Subject + Linking Verb + Predicative

  • Example:

    Sentence: The food is delicious.

    Note:

    • What is a sentence subject? sentence subject is the subject of the action in the sentence.
    • In English, use a Linking verb to link the subject and Predicative, so is is a Linking Verb.
    • Predicative is relating to or occurring within the predicate of a sentence.
    • Predicate is the part of a sentence that gives information about the subject.
    • In this sentence case, food is the subject of this sentence, and is is a Linking Verb, delicious is a Predicative of this sentence.

Patterns 3: Subject + Verb + Object

  • Example:

    Sentence: He took his bag and left.

    Note:

    • In this sentence case, He is the subject of this sentence.
    • took and left is the action of this sentence, so they are Verbs.
    • his bag is the object of this sentence, so it’s Object.

Patterns 4: Subject + Verb + Indirect object + Direct object

  • Example:

    Sentence: Her father bought her a dictionary.

    Note:

    • Her father is the subject of this sentence.
    • Bought is the verb of this sentence.
    • her is people, so it’s the Indirect object of this sentence.
    • dictionary is a thing, so it’s the Direct object of this sentence.

Patterns 5: Subject + Verb + Object + Complement

  • Example:

    Sentence: We made him our monitor

    Note:

    • We is the subject of this sentence.
    • Made is the verb of this sentence.
    • him is the object of this sentence.
    • Our monitor is a Complement of the object of this sentence, so it’s the Complement of this sentence.
